Leaving the Herd

by Michael Berry on July 20, 2014

We all know what it is like to be a part of the herd mentality. It is comfortable and easy to think and behave like everyone else you come in contact with. Live the  same lifestyle; wear similar clothes; participate in the same activities; think the same thoughts; hold the same religious or political views; or support the same sports teams. And while this can create a feeling of security and belonging, it comes at a terrible price.
The cost is your individuality.
You are a unique person with unique talents. You have something to offer the universe that no one else can offer. Importantly, you can create a unique purpose that will manifest itself in ways only you can create. And critically, you will never be happy unless you discover this purpose and pursue its creation. This is the secret to a happy and fulfilling life.
This doesn’t exist in the herd. A wise man once said, “The purpose of the herd is to keep you in the herd.” The herd suppresses individuality for sameness, thwarts creativity for familiarity and attacks difference as if it were its enemy.
Personal development is our business and our life.

In personal development we learn that “we all see and experience the world not as it is, but as we are”.
