I recently had to create a new blog because of my blog host’s (Blog.com) poor performance. In the process I discovered something interesting.Your Alexa ranking is determined by your blog host and has little to do with your actual blog if they’re placing it as their sub-domain name.
If you have a host provider for your primary website, such as I do with Host Gator why not boast your ranking of both sites by using a sub-domain name yourself. For me my primary website is http://www.prosperyourmind.com and my blog site (sub-domain) is http://blog.prosperyourmind.com. So if you go to Alexa you will find my new blog site already has the ranking of my website. It beats starting from scratch and also makes a very nice bond in the rankings for me for both.
Let me explain that Alexa shows your ranking against all blog sites and does not have anything to do with your keywords, but it is a good indicator off the progress you are making with the popularity of your site.

Michael, My blog is a subdomain of my web site and my Alexa ranking has increased exponentially since joining TSA. Other people coming to the site and posting comments and syndicating posts also increases your ranking. Thanks for sharing your insights about this process.

Hi Mike, your are correct about the Alexa rankings. But it actually goes even further than that. Because what you have been doing by being a subdomain is build THEIR traffic not yours! So all the effort you put into getting traffic to your blog has benefited them. Now, I am not saying it did not help you. However, it benefits them a lot more. If all users do that for their sub-domains, than they create a top website at all your expense. Not a very good situation, as you found out. I am glad you moved your blog. It looks great!

Must admit to not taking Alexa rank too seriously – it throws up some weird results occasionally. I’ve had sites with pathetic ranking show up on page 1 google and top 500k sites lost in cyberworld somewhere – I have found TSA and similar reciprocal comment linking networks impact ranking quite dramatically though

I had no idea about Alexa. And I have no idea why it is important. I have hear of google of course but not Alexa. And I went to the site and am confused. Another learning curve I guess.It says “Avela.com is ranked #1,004,742 in the world according to the three-month Alexa traffic rankings.” How can that be when I am page 5 of Google for “China Sourcing”. Is that a good or horrible number? I have a ranking of “8″. Is that good?
I don’t expect answers but it just another thing I have to learn I guess. How to tweak Alexa. Or is it not that big a deal?
Remember Gary it’s a worldwide ranking for all sites and all search terms. You should use it as just a guide as to whether your site is improving from month to month. I hope that helps.

Hi Michael,
Thanks for the tip on duplicating your website and address on the host carrier. I had and still have some problems with my blog because I used an inferior host at the beginning, and could not get the ip address to transfer, it was transfer as best possible but it still has some issues.

This is so interesting, thanks so much. I do my blog as a “folder” within my main website, so not sure if that has similar benefits as you’re suggesting. I just got the domain “thepassiondoctor.com” and am considering changing my “www.passion101.com” blog to that, but am definitely concerned that I will lose all of the directory history and rankings that I’ve accumulated over the past two years. Any thoughts?

It should be Adam but you can check it out by putting both your main site in and look at the rankings then put in your blog address and they should be exactly the same ranking. Hope that helps. See some of my other replies to see what that really means and how to utilize it.

That’s interesting about subdomains…didn’t know that! I’ve been following my Alexa ranking for a while so it’s been a great learning process for me as a blogger.
